Apple today released the 2.0 version of the iPhone software. This upgrade is free to iPhone users, comes standard in the new iPhone 3G and is a paid ($9.99 I think) upgrade for iPod Touch users. One of the key improvements with this upgrade, is vastly improved support for Microsoft Exchange. Users will now be able to automatically synchronize their email, contacts and calendar. This synchronization is wireless and immediate giving iPhone users a similar experience to Blackberry and Windows Mobile users. Also similar is the ability to remotely erase the contents from the phone should it be lost or stolen.
OK, I’m sold. How do I configure the thing?
Before proceeding much further you need two things: an iPhone/iPod Touch with 2.0 software and an UW Exchange account. If you haven’t yet upgraded to 2.0 we’ll wait while you do so now…..Don’t forget to upgrade to iTunes 7.7 as part of the process. There is a freshlymobile.com article to help you find latest iTunes and the 2.0 software if you don’t already have it.
Let’s get started
The first step is to tap the Settings icon from the iPhone home screen.

Tap the Mail, Contacts, Calendars button
Choose Microsoft Exchange at the top of the screen.

Now we enter the meat of the configuration. The smudged text in this screen shot generally illustrates where personal information is entered, while the clear text is likely the same for everyone.
Email: enter your @u.washington (or other) email address.
Username: enter netid\ (yes, that’s a backslash) followed by your UW NetID.
Password: enter your, ehh, password.
Description: enter UW Exchange or any other name you’d like to give this service on your iPhone.
Tap Done or Next.

Mostly likely you will see a message asking you to accept the certificate. Tap Accept.
Almost done. You will now need to tell the iPhone the name of our Exchange server. Enter exchange.washington.edu in the Server field.
Finally choose which services you want to automatically sync with Exchange. You can always changes these choices later by visiting the Mail, Contacts, Calendar preferences in the Settings area.
I hope this helps get you going. Please let me know if you have any corrections or suggestions.

I had to change my e-mail password, and could no longer access my Microsoft Exchange account through my iPhone, even after changing the password through Settings. David suggested deleting the account and starting over, which worked!
Also similar is the ability to remotely erase the contents from the phone should it be lost or stolen. ???
Simo:
If you’re iPhone is lost your stolen, you can easily tell the system to remotely erase the contents of your iPhone. To erase your phone, you would first need to access your UW Exchange account from a web browser (http://exchange.washington.edu).
After you log in, there is an “options” button at the top of the page. Clicking that will take you to the screen to select your mobile device and have it erased.
Based on my testing, it will be erased in less than 30 seconds later. This feature is the same for the iPhone and Windows Mobile devices. The Blackberry can also be remotely erased, but the procedure is a little different.

I tried using these directions with my iPod Touch, and after I enter everything, it tells me that “Exchange account verification failed.” I did notice one difference between your screenshots and mine; the Touch has a field for Domain and then it says “optional.” As it was “optional,” I didn’t put anything in that field. Could that be what’s wrong?
The Domain (Netid) is needed to connect to the UW Exchange system. Try using the domain and see if you have any better luck.

David, I set my iphone up the way you recommended. When I went to save the changes the message said:
Syncing with Exchange will remove your exisitng contacts and calenders from your iPhone.
I don’t want to lose what’s already in my phone.
Is there any way around this?
Mary
Yes, you can setup Exchange to sync your email, calendar and/or contacts. If you only choose to sync your email, it will not delete your contacts, or calendar. If you happen to use MobileMe (www.me.com), your personal calendar AND the Exchange calendar can co-exist.
