We are on the cusp of making great strides towards the promise of mobility. This isn't a site about me, but rather I wanted a place where people can come to learn and talk about how the promise is being realized.

More iOS than Windows devices on UW Wi-Fi

Pie chart with Fall-11 Wi-Fi usageMobile continues strong growth
It is happening everywhere. Mobile growth continues to explode. Looking at data from the University of Washington’s Wi-Fi network, we find that handheld devices are up sharply (26%) to nearly 50,000 unique devices since May 2011. iPads make up the largest growth segment and are up 60% since May. This is followed by growth in Android (39%), iPhone (34%) and Macs (6%). Windows is down slightly with a drop of 5.5%. iPod touches (-9.9%), Windows Mobile (-33%) and virtually all others in the handheld category were down. Windows Phone is up to 718 devices seen on wifi.

Overall there are more iOS devices than there are traditional Windows machines on the University of Washington Wi-Fi network. If you add mobile Windows flavors to the mix, the story is slightly reversed. In all it is nearly a tie. It will be interesting to see if this trend continues over the coming months.

This fall saw a total of 112,639 unique devices on the campus Wi-Fi network. This excludes the new clinical and guest services at the hospitals.

During this time we saw 65,000 users. This equates for an average of 1.7 devices per user.

Check out the detailed counts for handhelds here and all devices here.

[Updated statistics. Original numbers had incorrectly reported Windows Phone in the Windows count. Windows Phone OS now accounts for 718 devices for a total of 919 Mobile Windows devices.

Custom iPad skin

Custom iPad skin

One of the first things I did when I got my iPad2, was go to Zagg.com and create a custom skin to protect the back. This is similar to the one I made for my iPhone, it includes a UW “W” (it is a work device after all) on a field of purple and my contact info at the bottom. They are easy to make. You can even use the designer on the zagg web site or choose from one of their ready designed options. I made another for my wife’s iPad and she loves it.

While I paid full price, if you want one (or even a regular Invisible shield), act before the end of May and you will get 50% off the regular price.

Multimedia - grade Wi-Fi

picture of netflix on iPadNot Your Father’s Wi-Fi
I’ve recently begun working with a cross industry working group to define the issues and requirements of for creating multimedia-grade Wi-Fi networks. But, don’t all Wi-Fi networks support multi-media, you may ask? Yes, generally speaking you’ll have little trouble streaming Netflix on your iPad or using Skype on your laptop. But what happens when you have 10 users doing the same? 50 users? Hundreds? How do these services scale? What about security? How do we deal with problems such as multicast (a longstanding issue with Wi-Fi)?

A single network vendor, client device or specific architecture and design generally do not resolve these issues. Rather it is likely a combination of all three that will be needed.

Our first steps are address 5 major issues surrounding most major deployments. They include:
1) Multimedia drivers
2) Scale
3) Security
4) Network Integration
5) Client Integration

Recently I lead a discussion with the group on the Multimedia drivers. You can read about that discussion and the work we are doing at multimediagrade.com.

Updates and Twitter integration

twitterbird imageSome of you have noticed that I’ve added a few new features to FreshlyMobile. The most notable change is better integration with Twitter.

Twitter to the Left, Twitter to the right

Twitter is a great tool for sharing interesting stories and content I run across. Increasingly I have been posting via twitter rather than creating a full post to this blog. While this might be the lazy way out, I’ve found it very helpful to quickly get the word out and move along with my day.

Because of this, I’ve added two ways to help keep up-to-date with these posts. First take a look to the left… here you will find a section called “Some Recent Tweets”. This section displays the last 5 messages I’ve posted on Twitter, including links to relevant URLs. Rather have these in your favorite news reader? No worries, just click the RSS icon just to the left of the section title.

Rather just follow these updates via twitter, look to the right and tap the “Follow Me” tab.

Feel free to comment or send email to let me know if these features are useful to you.

Apple+Verizon+Small iPhone=Still unlikely

iphone-nanoTiny Whispers about a Smaller iPhone

Over the weekend the rumor mill was in full gear talking yet again about the iPhone coming to the Verizon network. This time the rumors are reported by Apple insider citing a Taiwanese manufacturer that is said to avoid a contract to produce a new “worldmode iPhone” that will run on both GSM and Verizon’s CDMA networks.
